The Narcotics Unit is responsible for the enforcement of applicable laws pertaining to narcotics and dangerous drugs, the latent investigations of organized crime groups and criminal enterprises engaged in narcotics trafficking. The Unit also gathers and disseminates pertinent information concerning narcotics to divisions within the DeKalb Police Department and other agencies.

The Narcotics Unit directs enforcement efforts toward criminal drug organizations within DeKalb County. Additionally, members from the Narcotics Unit work with various agencies including the DEA, GBI and US Marshal’s.

The Vice Unit is responsible for the investigation of adult establishments, illegal gambling, prostitution, pornography, regulation of alcoholic beverage laws and escort services.

The Major Felony Unit consists of four divisions which include Homicide, Robbery, Domestic Violence and Gun Units.

The Robbery Unit is tasked with the investigation of armed robberies and forcible robberies. This consists of crimes regarding the taking of property from a person either through the use of a weapon, violence or the threat of violence and sudden snatching.

The Homicide Unit is tasked with the investigation of all homicides, other deaths and any type of personal assault. Homicides consist of murder, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter. Other deaths are suicides, accidental and natural. Assaults consist of any felonious or misdemeanor assault, threat of violence, kidnapping and any other type of personal assault. This unit also investigates officer involved weapon discharges.

The Domestic Violence Unit investigates cases involving serious violence where there is an incident of "Family Violence" as described in Georgia Law and both the suspect and victim are adults. The unit also handles physical assaults on the elderly, ages 65 or older, by caretakers or family members.

The Gun Unit is also part of the Major Felony Unit. The Gun Unit’s primary responsibility is tracking all firearms recovered from crime scenes or suspects and determining the origin. The unit works closely with the ATF on all investigations. The goal of the unit is to identify and prosecute illegal firearm sales.

Special Victims Unit

The Youth and Sex Crimes Unit is responsible for investigating a wide range of criminal cases. The unit handles missing persons (children and adults), harassing phone calls and sexual related crimes ranging from child molestation to rapes of adults and juveniles. The Unit also handles child deaths that are connected to abuse.

Fraud Unit

The Fraud and Financial Crimes Unit investigates all crimes involving: organized scams, computer related crimes, counterfeit currency, manufacturing of false identification, telemarketing scams, organized multi-jurisdictional flim flam schemes and organized ongoing fraud and /or complex financial investigations which include but are not limited to the manufacture of checks or credit cards.

The responsibility of the Auto Theft Unit is to conduct follow-up investigation on cases associated with vehicle thefts, motor cycle thefts, unauthorized use of motor vehicles, stolen vehicle parts, chop shops, thefts of boats, trailers, heavy equipment and cargo thefts, In addition, they investigate thefts with car dealerships, rental car agencies, title fraud violations associated with salvage yards and any other entities associated with vehicles and their commerce.

The Property Crimes section handles all types of non-violent crimes involving theft, residential, and business burglaries or damage against personal property. Each precinct is staffed with a Property Crimes Unit.

The Pawn Unit monitors the daily activity of the pawn shops and precious metal dealers operating within DeKalb County. The unit operates as a liaison between pawn shops, detectives and other law enforcement agencies.

The Crime Scene Unit is responsible for complex crime scene investigations; responsibility for the evaluation of the scene; uses various types of equipment; develops, secures, and packages physical evidence for scientific evaluation and comparison; prepares detailed reports on the observations and activities at the scene for the law enforcement agency responsible for the investigation of the crime; testifies in court regarding the findings and processing methods used at the scene. In addition to the Crime Scene Investigators we also employ Marijuana Laboratory Analysts, Latent Print Examiners and Forensic Photographers.
